The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Thursday said his administration was committed to zero waste philosophy.

Aiyedatiwa stated this at a summit organised by the State Environmental Protection Agency (OSEPA) in Akure, with the theme: “Combating the menace of plastic pollution, and tagged consolidation time 3.0.”

The governor said his administration was ready to adopt the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) which was a scheme to make manufacturers of some items be responsible for creating measures to take back and recycle the products they produce.

“One of the problems the entire world is facing is the danger of plastic pollution which is characterised with hydra-headed problems on the ecosystem and healthy existence of human beings.

“Equally worrisome is the habit of dumping wastes into our waterways, drains and canals, thereby clogging them with plastics and other non-biodegradable materials.

“You will all recall that our administration has procured an amphibious excavator for each senatorial district of the state for dredging of our waterways and canals to allow free water flow for the purpose of protecting lives and property,” he said.

He charged participants to continue to display professional skills in ensuring the achievement of the target committed to them.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Environment, Dr Razak Salako, said the Federal Government was committed to finding lasting solution to the sea incursion bedevilling the people of the riverine area of the State.

Salako said the Federal Government is in touch with the state government on how to resolve the various environmental challenges facing the state.

He expressed happiness with the state government’s efforts at ensuring a cleaner environment.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr Adeyemi Olayemi, appreciated the government’s efforts at making the state an environmental friendly for residents.
