OBJ drops fresh bombshell security in Nigeria
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised concerns over Nigeria’s growing insecurity, emphasizing the need for immediate action to tackle the crisis that has engulfed parts of the country.
Speaking on Sunday in Bauchi State during the inauguration of road projects completed by Governor Bala Mohammed, Obasanjo warned that the security situation is worse now than during his presidency, when he made the protection of lives and property a national priority.
Obasanjo advocated for community policing, where residents know and monitor each other, as a key strategy to combat security threats.
He made these remarks during a visit to the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman-Adamu, stressing that traditional rulers should encourage this approach in their domains.
“The best form of security is community policing because everyone knows their neighbors,” he said. “With that, it becomes easy to identify wrongdoers.”
He lamented that the insecurity plaguing Nigeria today was far more severe than during his administration and urged the government to act swiftly.
Obasanjo also highlighted the importance of unity and collective decision-making, referencing his time in office when national security decisions were made collectively with input from key officials.
Turning to humanitarian efforts, Obasanjo announced the donation of hearing aids to 2,000 individuals in Bauchi. He shared a personal story of discovering his own partial deafness while abroad, which led him to establish the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation. The foundation has since provided hearing treatments and aids to thousands across Nigeria, with plans to assist over 10,000 people in the North-East.
Governor Mohammed, on his part, discussed his administration’s focus on infrastructure development. He highlighted the construction of 116 road projects covering 1,482 kilometers across Bauchi State. Among the key projects inaugurated were the dualization of the Awala-Maiduguri road, the Kano road leading to Bauchi Airport, and the Gubi Gari-Nasarawa road, linking Bauchi and Ganjuwa local government areas. Mohammed noted that these projects were part of his broader vision for the state, emphasizing that leadership should prioritize collective progress over personal ambition.
