National Grid: Coleman MD attributes frequent collapse to poor infrastructure

The Managing Director, Coleman Wires and Cables, Mr George Onafowokan, has attributed the frequent collapse of the national grid to poor infrastructure.

Onafowokan, in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, called on the Federal Government to urgently address the recurring collapse of the grid.

He emphasised the need to replace outdated cables that had exceeded their shelf life, leading to inefficiencies across the power distribution system.

“Many cables in use today are no longer fit, resulting in frequent grid failures that have significantly impacted the manufacturing sector,” he said

According to him, these failures have affected manufacturers, forcing many to rely on costly alternatives such as diesel-powered generators.

He said: “Increasing prices of diesel has further compounded the problem, with many businesses struggling to keep their operations running.

“The cost of manufacturing is skyrocketing every day due to energy costs, and this is making it difficult for businesses to remain viable.”

Onafowokan urged the Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, to implement a strategic long-term solution that would not only address the infrastructure but also focus on localised power generation.

He also called for the creation of power clusters, where industries could generate and share power within specific areas.

According to him, decentralising power generation can lower costs and ensure more stable access to electricity for businesses.

“The manufacturing sector, already burdened by inconsistent power supply, continues to suffer as grid collapses disrupt production schedules.

“This leads to increased costs and delays.

“The appeal underscores the urgency of addressing these challenges, as Nigeria seeks to revitalise its economy through improved industrial output, “the MD said.
