A 50-year old man, Ifeanyi Oru, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N1.3 million from another, under the guise of helping to secure a travelling visa.

The defendant is standing trial before Magistrate L. K.J Layeni, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2022.

He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N1.3 million from Onyedikachi Maduka, with a promise to help him secure a travelling visa.

The prosecutor said that the defendant never secured the visa but bolted with the money until he was eventually apprehended by the police.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 314(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Jan. 29, 2025, for mention.
