Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, has assured indigenes of the state of his administration’s resolve to ensure enrolment of more youths into the various military formations.

Sanwo-Olu, who gave the assurance on Monday at the departure ceremony of the 88 Regular Recruit Intakes (RRI) from Lagos State, said enrolment of more youths would boost national security.

The ceremony was held at the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army Cantonment in Maryland, Ikeja Lagos.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, noted that the participation of Lagos indigenes in the army would in no small measure help in the security architecture of the nation.

According to him, the Nigerian Army is a symbol of the nation’s resilience, valour, and indomitable spirit.

Sanwo-Olu, therefore, encouraged the potential recruits to remain steadfast in their dedication and commitment to the nation.

“By joining its ranks, you embrace a calling that transcends individual ambition, committing yourselves to the safety, stability, and prosperity of our country.

“This is no small feat and we recognise the weight of your commitment, the sacrifices it entails, and the unwavering support you will require.

“Rest assured, the Nigerian Army is equally committed to your welfare throughout your service.

“I urge you to internalise the core values of integrity, professionalism and loyalty.

“These principles will not only guide your military careers, but will also define you as individuals dedicated to the service of humanity,” he said.

The governor, thereafter, charged them to be good ambassadors of the state.

He also urged them to uphold the values of the Nigerian Army and make the state proud.

Earlier in his welcome address, Brig. Gen Olawale Oyekola, the Commander of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja Cantonment, commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment.

Oyekola expressed his delight for the state government’s resilience in attracting more indigenes of Lagos into the army’s recruitment process.

He added that the Nigerian Army had good synergy with the Lagos State Government in terms of sensitisation programmes and empowering it’s personnel in the state.

Giving an insight into the process of selection of the potential recruits, Oyekola said 427 candidates were shortlisted.

“Out of 314 candidates that reported for screening, 144 potential recruits were picked comprising of five females, 136 males and three reserves.

“They are ready for the task ahead for training at the Army depot in Zaria,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow potential RRIs, Olanrewaju Ajidagba, appreciated the state government for its guidance and support thus far.

“We pledge to be committed and be good ambassadors of the state and, by extension, the nation,” Ajidagba pledged.
