Online streaming platform, Spotify, says it has partnered with UnitedMasters, a music distribution platform, to empower no fewer than 20 emerging artistes on collaborative recording, music and media training.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa, during the programme on Friday, said the training aimed at equipping young artistes with essential skills and knowledge to navigate their music career.

Okumu said this was important considering the ever-evolving Nigeria’s trendsetting music scene.

According to her, the training session tagged “Fresh Finds Sessions”, began on Thursday and will end on Saturday.

“Spotify has partnered with UnitedMasters to empower Nigerian emerging artistes.

“The three-day ‘Fresh Finds Sessions’ focuses on collaborative recording, music education and media training for songwriters, artistes and music producers.

“The first day provided emerging artistes with comprehensive tools, insights and opportunities to turn their musical aspirations into sustainable career.

“From Streetpop to Afrobeats and beyond, Nigeria has established itself as a powerhouse of exquisite African music.

“Playlisting and platforming are key tools to turn today’s underground sensations into the next superstars,” she said.

Okumu noted that through strategic collaborations, immersive training, and targeted artiste promotion, Spotify would continue to amplify emerging Nigerian talent and connect them to global audiences

“Spotify will continue to back musicians at every stage of their journey, empowering them to grow, evolve, and continue to reach new heights in the industry,” she said.

David Melhado, Vice President of Music and Marketing at UnitedMasters, highlighted the partnership’s significance, underscoring Spotify’s role as a bridge between artistes and global audiences.

He emphasised the shared values of the partnership and how important it is to the core mission of empowering independent artistes to succeed in the competitive music industry.

Also, Jodie Tabisher, Spotify’s Artiste and Label Partnerships Manager for Southern Africa, Afro-soul artiste World, shared valuable insights into music career management.

He highlighted the importance of artistes understanding the business side of music.

He said: “Being able to understand the business, to communicate with your manager to make the best decisions together is very important.

“Consistency is a part of the craft that sets a great musician apart from the rest and it’s important to keep an open mind.

“You never know when you are going to make the next hit record, just showing up is one of the key things.”

Rigo Kamp, who is currently the face of ‘Fresh Finds Africa’ playlist, commended the organisers for the initiative.

He said, “I didn’t know what to expect but after having my session, I’m just in awe and happy about my involvement. For Spotify and Unitedmasters to find me worthy to participate in this programme, it’s an honour.”

The highlight of the day was the recording sessions, where artistes, songwriters, and producers collaborated in the studio.
Young producers Yosa and Saszy worked alongside songwriter Olayinka Ehi.

Emerging artistes Dhee Drey, Jomanie, Salle, and Azia, also invested their time in turning musical ideas into potential breakthrough tracks.
