Eno urges Eastern Obolo communities, SPFL to embrace peace

Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, has urged the people of Eastern Obolo and the management of Sterling Petrochemical and Fertiliser Limited (SPFL) to avoid acts that will trigger crisis.
Eno made the call during a meeting with leaders of Eastern Obolo communities and the management of SPFL on Thursday.
Eno who was on a tour of the area, said that the state government would not condone any act capable of causing crisis in any part of the state.
Recall that there has been a lingering face-off between the people of Eastern Obolo and SPFL over alleged displacement of 1,000 households by the company.
The community is accusing the firm of overstepping its bounds, and indulging in activities that impact negatively on the environment and the people’s traditional occupations.
The governor promised to setup a committee comprising representatives of the government, Eastern Obolo, SPFL and security agencies to ensure amicable settlement.
“The committee will look at issues such as environmental impact assessment and the relocation of Obianga and Ikonta communities.
“The committee will also ascertain the actual space occupied by the company and other issues that will enhance cordial relationship and harmony,” he said.
Eno urged both parties to maintain peace in the interest of their overall good, saying, “peace is essential for both the firm and host community”
“Our visit here should be a relief, it should give you hope. We have looked at the relocation issue, and the closure of the creeks, particularly as it affects Obianga and Ikonta.
“I urge you to continue to work with the company, the project has greater benefits for this community, Akwa Ibom and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Samuel Nteogwuijah, the Chairman, Eastern Obolo Local Government Council, commended the governor for the visit.
He said that Easter Obolo people were peace loving, and would not indulge in any act that could lead to breakdown of law and order.
Also speaking, the Paramount Ruler of Eastern Obolo, Chief Uboon Harry Etetor IX, described the governor’s visit as a step in the right direction.
The Managing Director, SPFL, Mr Mohit Barot, said that the company had been in operation in Nigeria for about 20 years.
Barot said that the choice of Akwa Ibom for one of their biggest operational bases in the country was because of its peaceful and business-friendly environment.
He assured that the firm would remain lawful and committed to its corporate social responsibility to the host communities.
