Valentine: National Gallery exhibits 60 artworks

The National Gallery of Arts on Friday launched an exquisite collection of 60 artworks that explore the subject matter of love, in celebration of the Valentine’s Day.

The exhibition is featuring a diverse range of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs, created by no fewer than 20 Nigerian artists.

Dr Celestine Agoziem, Curator of the National Gallery of Arts, during the opening of the exhibition at Aina Onabolu building, National Arts Theatre Complex, in Lagos, revealed the theme for the exhibition as “Lovers Art World”.

Agoziem noted that the exhibition was meant to inspire Nigerians to embrace true love even at this critical time in the nation’s history.

According to him, the exhibition, which is the first of its kind, was deliberately planned to showcase the many facets of love.

“Love is a universal language that transcends cultures and borders.

“Through this exhibition, we hope to inspire visitors to reflect on the importance of love in their lives and to appreciate the beauty and diversity of human experience.

“We invite Nigerians to visit our gallery, the exhibition is now opened to visitors from today, Feb. 14, to Feb. 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m.

“The exhibition will challenge your assumptions and broaden your understanding of love in all forms. This will contribute to personal growth and self-awareness,” he said.

Agoziem said that some of the artists whose works were on display were: Raji Enitan, James Itodo, Animu Oboiren, Christian Okwaranke, Ojo Olaniyi, Bolaji Jegede, Henry Igba, Mudashiru Ayoola, Raji David amongst others.

He said the exhibition was inspired by the historic narrative of a martyr named Valentine, which brought about the celebration of love, as the gallery is more focused on spurring individuals to embrace true love.
