Thrift collector docked for alleged N3.3m theft

A 36-year-of thrift collector, Janet Nathan, was on Wednesday docked in a Kaduna State Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing N3.3 million belonging to some traders.
Nathan, who resides in Trikania Kaduna, is standing trial on a six-count charge bordering on fraud and stealing.
She however pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between Jan. 4 and April 2 at Trikania Kaduna.
According to Leo, the defendant fraudulently obtained a total sum of N3.3 million from 23 traders involved in monthly contribution.
He said that the defendant posed as a contribution coordinator, stole the said sum belonging to Mary Sunday, Saratu Audu, Cynthia Njoku, Felicia Ezekiel and others and absconded with it.
She said that the defendant was arrested after the complainants lodged a complaint at the State Criminal and Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation.
He added that the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties’s in like sum.
Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
He adjourned the case until May 15, for hearing.
