The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), on Monday urged lawyers to do more to reflect the ideals of the legal profession to promote the integrity of legal practice.

Osigwe made this known at the opening of the 2025 Annual Law Week of the NBA, Lagos Branch.

The week had the theme: “Re-imagining the Practice of Law: Ethics, Innovation and the Future of Legal Services: Let’s Be Lawyers Again”.

In a goodwill message, Osigwe commended the leadership of the branch and the event’s planning committee, saying that the theme would make lawyers to reflect on the future of the profession.

He said that in the face of rapid global changes, economic uncertainties and technological disruption, the legal profession must not lose sight of its ethical foundations.

“It is not enough to innovate or expand practice areas. We must return to the core of what makes us lawyers – integrity, professionalism and fidelity to the rule of law.” he said.

He said that the theme was a timely and urgent reminder for lawyers to uphold their Rules of Professional Conduct and comply strictly with the 2025 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Rules.

“The legal profession must evolve, but in doing so, we must never become strangers to the values that built our credibility.

“Let us re-imagine the future of law with courage and with conscience,” he said.

Our correspondent reports that the event brought together lawyers, policymakers, scholars and technology experts to engage in discussions aimed at redefining legal services in Nigeria.
