The Embassy of Japan has donated an atmospheric water generator called “Elixir High-Tech Water Production Device” and laboratory equipment to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi in Nasarawa state.

Amb. Hideo Suzuki, Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria donated the equipment to the management of FMC Keffi at a handover ceremony in Keffi on Friday.

Speaking on the development, Suzuki said the gesture is aimed at improving healthcare services in the Keffi community by strengthening the healthcare system of FMC Keffi to meet the health needs of the people.

“This project is funded by the government of Japan with the aim of grassroots initiatives that enhances human security at the most essential level by providing access to safe water among others,” he said.

He said the new atmospheric water generator developed by a Japanese company called Sustainable Holdings Company Limited is expected to have significant positive impact on people’s lives in Keffi.

“This equipment does not only ensures supply of clean and safe water for medical use but also significantly improves infection control and oral hygiene which are critical components of any hospital system,” he said.

He added that the laboratory equipments donated with the atmospheric water generator would further improve the health centre diagnostic capability by helping medical staff provide timely and accurate care.

“This project is not only important to the centre itself but also to the broader community, serving thousands of residents in Nasarawa state and even beyond by equipping this facility with dependable technology.

“We are helping to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure for the future of generations of Nigeria,” he stated.

Suzuki explained further that the donation of the equipment also reflects the strong and growing relationship between Japan and Nigeria and demonstrates Japan’s commitment to promote cooperation in health and science and technology.

“Japan values Nigeria not only as a bilateral partner but also as a regional leader in whose prosperity and stability are of great importance to the entire African continent,” he added.

He thanked Dr Yahaya Baba-Adamu, Chief Medical Director of FMC Keffi and other top management staff for their dedication throughout the implementation of the project.

He also thanked the Centre for Development and Partnership (CEDEP) for the collaboration in making the project a success.

In his remarks, Mallam Yusuf Sulaiman, Executive Director, Centre for Development and Partnership (CEDEP) expressed joy over the transformative project and 16 years of strategic collaboration between CEDEP and the Embassy of Japan which according to him has been turning grassroots vision into nationwide impact.

“We remain humbled by the profound recognition of the Embassy of Japan as one of its most trusted partners in deepening Nigeria-Japan bilateral relations.

“This is to us not merely a trophy – it’s a beacon illuminating our shared journey to turn diplomacy into tangible hope; to bridge continents through commitment, creativity, and compassion.

Your Excellency, Mr Ambassador, this accolade is etched in our hearts,” he said.

Also, Mrs. Zulfa’u Danjuma, Representative of Sustainable Holdings Company Limited explained that the Elixir High-Tech Water Production Device is a breakthrough technology that turns air into pure, life-sustaining water.

“Commissioned here at the FMC keffi in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and CEDEP, this project embodies our shared vision: Leveraging sustainable technology to advance health, resilience, and human dignity,” she said.

She added that the Elixir Atmospheric Water Generator harnesses a simple yet revolutionary principle by extracting moisture from the air and transforming it into ultra-pure water.

“Unlike conventional water sources, which rely on ground water or municipal supplies vulnerable to contamination and scarcity, Elixir uses Advanced 13-stage purification integrating UV sterilization, ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO), and alkaline mineralization.

“This technology is not just innovative – it is essential; elixir offers an inexhaustible, climate – resilient solution, revolutionizing laboratory diagnostics and healthcare delivery.

For FMC Keffi, the elixir AWG is a catalyst for precision medicine,” she added.

Danjuma further pointed out that laboratory diagnostics demand water of exceptional purity but contaminants – even microscopic ones – can skew test results, misguide treatment, and endanger lives.

“But Elixir ensures unmatched purity for accuracy, zero dependency on external water infrastructure, continuous operation during emergency thereby safeguarding patient care when it matters most.

“It is cost effective, zero plastic waste, low carbon footprint and low maintenance with just annual change of filter.

In healthcare, water purity isn’t a luxury – it’s the foundation of trust. Elixir transforms air into certainty for every diagnosis,” she said.

In an interview with our correspondent, Dr Yahaya Baba-Adamu, CMD, FMC Keffi expressed his elation for FMC Keffi to be the first centre in Nigeria to benefit from the gesture from Japan.

“I am sure most of us know that water is produced from the ground but this time around with this machine it is from the atmosphere and it can produce at least up to 1000 litres of water per day.

“This water is not just ordinary water,
It is sterile, clean and can be used as drinking water and chemical analysis in the laboratories.

You can use it washing patients wounds and abdomens because it is sterile and does not have contaminants or gems in it.

“So there are many uses. You can also use it even in dialysis because it is a sterile water. So we are very happy and believe it is going to serve the people of this community.

We are most grateful to the people of Japan,” he said.
