Sports tool for unity, progress, development, says Mbah

Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State says sports is a veritable tool for unity, platform for youth development and social cohesion.
Mbah said this on Saturday at the Olympic Day celebration held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Lloyd Ekweremmadu, said that the Olympics value reflected the principles held dearly by the state.
“The Olympics value of excellence and respect reflects the principles that Enugu people hold dearly.
“They are values that guide our governance, inspire our youths and the way we build our communities.
“These ideals remind us that sports is more than just a game; it is a bridge, a platform,” he said.
Mbah said that the state had continued to place premium value on sports development through nurturing of talents at the grassroots.
He said also that it placed value in investing in sporting infrastructure and in supporting our athletes, not only to compete, but to excel on national and international stages.
“We recognise our young people, the future champions and the pride ambassadors of Enugu State and Nigeria, and we affirm our unwavering support for their dreams,” he said.
The President of Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) Habu Gumel, in his speech, said that engaging in sports fortified both the mind and body.
“It promotes robust health and well being of the individual; it compels us to strive for excellence and aspirations.
“Sports ignites our dreams; it disseminates joy and fosters unity amongst us,” he said.
Gumel added that the Olympics days consistently cultivated unity and solidarity across the world.
Our correspondent reports that the event witnessed some cyclists and other sports stakeholders moving round the streets of Enugu, in a show of solidarity.
Also, a volleyball game, as well as armchair wrestling match were organised to highlight the event.
