The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) have raised concern over removal of speed breakers by contractors working along the Oko Olowo Expressway in Ilorin.

The unions expressed concern in a statement on Saturday jointly signed by Kwara NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrasak Ariwoola and his counterpart of RTEAN, Alhaji Abdulrahman Onikijipa.

The statement said that a Federal Government Contractor had removed the speed breakers recently installed by the Kwara Government to prevent over speeding on the highway.

“Since the speed breakers were removed by a contractor working on the road, we are seriously concerned about the safety of commuters along Oko Olowo axis.

“We fear that this action may trigger a new wave of accidents and avoidable loss of lives on the road,” the statement said.

The unions urged the federal government to act urgently to restore the speed breakers and put in place other measures to protect lives on the expressway.
