Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident alongside his younger brother, André Silva, in northwestern Spain.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday near Zamora, as the brothers were reportedly en route to Santander to board a ferry to England.

Jota, 28, had only recently married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso just ten days earlier. He leaves behind three young children. His brother, André Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer, most recently playing for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.

According to local reports, the Lamborghini the brothers were travelling in veered off the road and caught fire. Spanish Civil Guard officials suspect a tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre may have triggered the crash, with speeding also under investigation as a possible factor.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Liverpool FC expressed being “devastated by the tragic passing”, while the Portuguese Football Federation mourned the loss, saying: “We have lost two champions.” Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo described the news as something that “doesn’t make sense”.

Jota was a key figure at Anfield since joining the Reds in 2020, known for his work rate, versatility, and clutch goals. Teammates and fans alike have been left shocked by the devastating news, remembering not only a gifted player but a beloved figure in the football community.
