Court remands businessman over alleged N7.4m scam

A Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has ordered a businessman, Haruna Usman, to be remanded in a correctional facility for alleged fraud.

Usman was charged by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with criminal misappropriation, criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The NSCDC prosecutor, Marcus Audu, told the court that the complainant reported the matter at the Corps’ office in Kafanchan on Aug.13.

Audu said the defendant collected the sum of N7.4 million from the complainant in 2024 for the supply of tin and refused to provide the material.

He said that all efforts made to retrieve the money from the defendant have proved abortive.

According to him, the offence violates sections 294, 297 and 307 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him to call witnesses to prove his case against the defendant.

He urged the court not to grant the defendant bail, arguing that he had been on the run since committing the crime in 2024.

In her ruling, the presiding Judge, Patience Birat, granted the prosecutor’s prayers and ordered him to be remanded.

Birat adjourned the case until Aug.27, for hearing.
