316 bags First Class at Unilorin 40th Convocation

A total of 316 students bagged First Class, out of the 11, 886 graduands of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), in various degrees and diplomas.

The Vice-Chancellor of Unilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, disclosed this on Monday, during the 40th Convocation media briefing.

“In the First Degree/Diploma category, we have 316 First Class, 4,120 Second Class (Upper Division), 5,939 Second Class (Lower Division), 1,078 Third Class and 11 Pass.

“The 40th Convocation ceremonies also include 175MBBS graduands, 94 Nursing graduands, 40 Optometry graduands, 36 Veterinary Medicine graduands and 64 Physiotherapy graduands. We have a total of 13 Diploma,” he said.

Egbewole further said that the total number of higher degrees to be awarded at the 40th Convocation ceremonies was 1,520.

“They include 182 Postgraduate Diplomas, 916 Masters, 188 Professional Masters and 234 Ph.Ds from various faculties,” he said.

According to him, as Unilorin celebrates 50 years of academic distinction and impact, it look back with pride, at the strides made in nurturing leaders, advancing knowledge and shaping national and global development.

He said that the institution look forward with renewed determination to sustain legacy of excellence in teaching, research and community service.

Egbewole said it was important to acknowledge the challenges that have slowed the pace, such as resource constraints, bureaucratic bottlenecks and changing educational landscape.

He said that the challenges had tested its resolve and strengthened the sense of purpose, saying that the institution has not allowed setbacks to derail it, but an opportunity for rethink, redesign and recommit.

Our correspondent reports that the convocation for four year programmes and diplomas would be held Oct. 22, while others was slated for Oct. 23.
