NOA urges Nigerians to unite against diabetes

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has urged Nigerians to unite in the campaign to combat diabetes.

Mr Ahmad Tijjani, the Director of the agency in Jigawa, said this in a statement by Sarah Ogodo, Head of Media and Communication, on Monday in Dutse.

Tijjani spoke at an event to mark the 2025 World Diabetes Day with the theme: “Diabetes Across Life Stages.”

He said the event was designed to create awareness on diabetics by promoting understanding and prevention.

The director said the aim was to unite communities, healthcare professionals and individuals worldwide to address diabetes.

He said the campaign focused on strengthening integrated care for diabetes management, promote a healthy workplace and balanced lifestyle,

He noted that diabetes could affect anyone, regardless of age or gender, and emphasised the importance of awareness, support and comprehensive care throughout every stage of life.

According to Tijjani, the campaign is highlighting the significance of wellbeing, as living with diabetes impacts not only physical health but mental and emotional wellbeing by promoting holistic health and collective responsibility.

He said the sensitisation was aimd at reducing its global burden towards creating a healthier, diabetes free world.

The director said that as people around the world work together to combat diabetes and promote healthy lifestyles, they consciously incorporate healthy practices into their daily routines.

“We should get our blood sugar checked at the nearest health centre because early detection saves lives, we should cut down on sugar, salt and processed foods and more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, we should also move your bodies every day, walk, dancing, or stretchimg for at least 30 minutes,” he said.

Tijjani urged the people to avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol, to avoid risk of diabetes and heart disease.

He also advised patients to watch out for warning signs like frequent urination, excessive thirst, tiredness, weight loss or slow healing wounds.

He further called for support and love to those living with diabetes, adding that: “together, we can prevent diabetes and protect our future.”
