EKEDC urges customers to embrace free prepaid meter scheme

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has urged customers to fully utilise its ongoing free prepaid meter programme to improve transparency and strengthen trust in electricity billing.

EKEDC Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, made the call during the Customers’ Consultative Forum held on Thursday at the Apapa Business Unit in Lagos.

She was represented by Mr Babatunde Lasaki, General Manager, Corporate Communications. Momoh reaffirmed the firm’s pledge to meter every unmetered customer at no cost.

She said the town hall meeting aimed to gather feedback on customer challenges and explore ways to enhance electricity service delivery across the district.

Momoh stressed that the initiative supports EKEDC’s broader plan to end estimated billing, improve satisfaction, and strengthen operational efficiency.

“We are committed to giving customers free, certified prepaid meters directly from EKEDC.

“This programme ensures transparent billing and helps customers monitor their consumption,” she said.

She assured customers that all meters meet national and technical standards, guaranteeing durability and accuracy.

The EKEDC boss warned residents against patronising unauthorised persons claiming to sell or hasten prepaid meter delivery.

“EKEDC does not authorise any third party to charge for prepaid meters.

“Anyone requesting payment for metering is a fraudster. Customers must not pay for what is free,” she said.

She urged customers to report extortion or suspicious activities through official EKEDC channels to curb fraud and protect consumers.

She added that the company is collaborating with security agencies to tackle meter-related scams within its network areas.

Momoh encouraged customers to apply through EKEDC service centres, the official website, or designated district offices for timely processing.

She said metering teams were already deployed across communities, with installation schedules being strictly observed.

She reaffirmed the company’s investment in network expansion and infrastructure upgrades to improve electricity supply and reliability.

“Our goal is fair billing and reliable power for every customer. The free meter programme is a major step towards achieving that,” she said.

The EKEDC CEO also assured residents of improved service delivery during the Yuletide, noting ongoing efforts to stabilise supply.

Oba Moroof Oyekunle Amodu-Tijani Oluwa (Amore III) of Iwa and Apapa Kingdom commended EKEDC and urged residents to embrace the free meter offer.

He called for peaceful dispute resolution and advised communities to protect EKEDC installations from vandalism.

“When electricity equipment is vandalised, it affects everyone. We must protect EKEDC’s assets and avoid tampering with meters,” he said.

ACP Onwuamaegbu Onyinye, Police Area Commander, Apapa, praised EKEDC for using the forum to resolve disputes and pledged police support.

She urged customers to avoid vandalism and help safeguard electricity infrastructure across the district.

CSP Uche Gabriel, DPO of Ajeromi Division, appealed to residents to secure transformers and installations, noting rising vandalism cases.

He encouraged community leaders to collaborate with police to protect critical assets and warned vandals of imminent arrest. (NAN)
