Smokers at higher risk of developing diabetes — Endocrinologist

An Endocrinologist based in Bauchi, Dr Ayuba Mugana, says smokers and individuals with cholesterol-related health issues are at higher risk of developing diabetes.

Mugana disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday in Bauchi.

Our correspondent reports that diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the human body turns food into energy. It occurs when blood sugar (glucose) is too high, leading to various health problems.

Common symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, and unintended weight loss.

The doctor, therefore, said “smoking distrupts insulin function and causes inflammation.

“Insulin is a crucial hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and plays vital role in energy metabolism, allowing cells to absorb glucose from the blood stream, which is then used for energy.
“Diabetes is not caused only by heredity or high blood pressure. Smokers and people with cholesterol problems are also at significant risk.”

The endocrinologist debunked common myths surrounding the consumption of local chickens compared to broiler chickens, particularly among diabetic patients.

According to him, protein intake is important for people living with diabetes, noting that broiler chickens tend to contain more fat due to their feed and restricted movement.

“Local chickens move around freely and feed naturally, which makes them leaner.

“However, the claim that broilers are unhealthy depends on the consumer’s preference.”

Mugana advised individuals who chose to consume broiler chicken to reduce fat intake by removing the skin, where most of the fat is concentrated.

The expert disclosed that recent cases recorded in health facilities showed that youths were also increasingly at risk of the disease.

He, therefore, cautioned youths to adopt healthy lifestyles, stressing that diabetes often takes between 10 and 15 years to manifest.

“Diabetes does not present itself early. It usually begins with insulin resistance,” he added.
