NLC urges proactive action for progress in 2026
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged governments at all levels, to prioritise accountability, stewardship, responsiveness, social justice and improved security in 2026.
Chairperson of the Lagos chapter of NLC, Funmi Sesi, gave the advice on Wednesday, in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos.
She said that sustained measures aimed at enhancing welfare of Nigerians, would ease the burden of workers and citizens in the new year.
The chairperson appealed to government to take proactive steps in the new year, aimed at tackling spate of insecurity in the country, so as to protect lives, property and ensure a free flow of economic activities.
On social justice, Sesi underscored the need for increased quality healthcare and education.
She urged government to increase the budgetary allocations for health, education and security, as being critical sectors.
The chairperson also spoke on the need for tax justice, urging that taxation which affects the poor, should be discouraged.
In her outlook for 2026, she said that workers anticipate a reduction in the cost of goods and services, especially food items.
She noted that this can be achieved by deliberate support to farmers, to boost agricultural production.
Moreso, Sesi noted that the new minimum wage expected in the year, should be negotiated fairly, to reflect true living wages of workers.
The NLC ultimately, harped on the need for a secure nation, with affordable basic amenities to uplift living standards.
She also urged a prioritisation of the rights, freedom, and happiness of citizens in a bid to stem the tide of migration.
