Cannabis peddler bags 2 years jail term in Oyo
The Federal High Court in Ibadan has sentenced one Seun Ogunlade to two years in Agodi Correctional Centre for peddling 820 grammes of Cannabis Sativa.
Delivering judgment, Justice Nkeonye Maha convicted and sentenced Ogunlade based on his guilty plea and the evidence tendered against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Command.
Maha, however, said that a light sentence was imposed on the convict because he was a first time offender, did not waste the time of the court and had shown remorse.
“To serve as deterrent to others, Ogunlade is sentenced to two years in prison, starting from his first date of arrest.
“The weed exhibit found in possession of the convict shall be destroyed by the NDLEA.
“Also, the money found in his possession is hereby, forfeited to the Federal Government’s account,” Maha held.
Shortly before the judgment, the defence counsel, Mr M.A. Yekeen had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his client.
The defence lawyer assured the court that he would personally monitor the convict and ensure that he lives a purposeful and crime free life after his jail term.
The prosecutor, Mr D.O. Otunla had earlier told the court that the convict committed the crime on Oct. 24, 2025, in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Otunla further stated that NDLEA operatives received intelligence reports that Ogunlade was into the illicit business of drug dealing.
According to the prosecutor, the operatives swung into action, and indeed apprehended the convict with a sack containing 820 grammes of Cannabis Sativa.
He said that the offence contravened section 11 (C ) of the NDLEA Act Cap n30 law of the federation 2004.
The Act prescribes a maximum of life imprisonment for anyone found guilty.
Otunla had prayed the court to invoke section 19(A) and 11(B1) of the proceeds of crime Act on Ogunlade for the forfeiture of the N22,000 found in his possession which he made from selling Cannabis.
