Jos attacks: Senate directs IG-P to commence investigation

The Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to commence investigations into the recent attacks in Jos, Plateau, and make the culprits to face the full wrath of the law.

The senate’s resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Sen. Diket Plang (APC-Plateau) during Tuesday’s plenary and supported by Sen. Simon Lalong (APC-Plateau) and Sen. Pam Dachungyang (APC-Plateau).

Our correspondent reports that the motion was tagged: “Urgent need to upscale security operations in Kanam and Jos North Local Government Areas of Plateau State”.

Our correspondent also reports that the Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau North Senatorial District was attacked by gunmen on March 2026, killing scores of residents.

The senate also resolved to send a high-powered delegation, led by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to the crisis areas to condole with the victims and the entire people of the state.

It urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to direct its agencies to supply relief materials to the area.

Our correspondent reports that a minute silence was observed in honour of the victims of the attacks.

Moving the motion, Plang noted that Plateau, hitherto known as the home of peace and tourism, had gradually lost that renown due to incessant crises and attacks by marauding criminals in the last few decades.

“Though efforts were made by both the federal and state governments in restoring peace, the relative peace being enjoyed has also been recently shattered.

“This is with the dastardly attack that happened in Kanam Local Government Area in Plateau Central Senatorial District in early March and the attack in the Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area area in Plateau North Senatorial District on Sunday, March 29.

“This was while many were enjoying their Sunday evening and many others returning from evening services where scores were killed and many injured.

“This recent attack appears to be a well-coordinated and well-orchestrated one, targetting defenceless citizens in a densely-populated area bubbling with social, economic and religious activities.

“The crisis in Plateau has become very complex because of its ethnic and religious coloration, with recent attacks having no particular target or reason but pointing toward an act of terrorism.

“We are worried that the incessant crises on the Plateau is eroding the state and its peaceful citizens, the ambience of peace and harmony that was once the hallmark of the state,” he said.

Our correspondent reports that the prayers of the motion were adopted by the senators after a voice vote called by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau.
