NNPP warns INEC over court orders, 2027 timetable

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has warned that unresolved leadership disputes could disrupt the 2027 general election timetable if ignored by INEC.

In a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, National Secretary, Mr Ogini Olaposi, said persistent disobedience to court orders could trigger legal actions affecting the timetable.

He alleged: “INEC’s disobedience to court orders is avoidable. It is disturbing that an institution led by a Professor of Law refuses to obey valid court rulings.”

He cited a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment directing INEC, within 72 hours, to recognise the Dr Agbo Major-led National Working Committee.

“Three weeks later, the commission has yet to comply, without any credible explanation,” Olaposi said.

He added that time began counting from the judgment date, noting INEC was duly served and proof of service recorded in court.

“It stands to reason that INEC must accord the NNPP adequate and equal time to prepare for and participate in the 2027 elections,” he said.

Olaposi warned that the party would initiate contempt proceedings and pursue the matter to the Supreme Court if non-compliance persists beyond seven days.

“We call on the Federal Government and stakeholders to urgently call INEC to order to prevent distortion of the 2027 timetable,” he said.

He urged the Attorney-General and the Nigerian Bar Association leadership to investigate developments within the commission.

“The judiciary must protect its authority and ensure lawful orders are neither ignored nor undermined.

“INEC’s conduct may threaten democracy. We urge it to retrace its steps and restore confidence,” he said

He also called for a comprehensive overhaul of INEC, particularly its legal department, to safeguard democratic credibility.

Olaposi claimed that the commission’s actions contradict the spirit and letter of the President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
