Lagos activates emergency response to gas truck crash on Eko bridge

The Lagos State Government has activated emergency response, following a gas truck accident on Eko bridge, outward Apongbon, on Tuesday.

The Head of Public Affairs, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Olawale Afolabi, disclosed this to our correspondent on Tuesday in Lagos.

LASEMA confirmed a front tyre burst caused a 10-tonne gas truck to overturn while in motion.

The agency said the truck, carrying 10,090kg of cooking gas, lost control, hit the road median and fell, causing continuous gas leakage.

“The incident also damaged a solar-powered street light on the bridge,” he said.

He said Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed immediate multi-agency intervention to safeguard lives and prevent escalation.

According to him, agencies at the scene included: LASEMA, Lagos Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), LNSC, Police and NUPENG.

He said emergency teams have cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to ensure public safety.

“Firefighters are suppressing explosion risks while technical teams work to stop the gas leakage,” he added.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that safety remains government’s top priority.

He urged residents to avoid the area and refrain from using naked flames near the scene.

He also urged tanker operators to maintain vehicle safety standards and comply with regulations.

Our correspondent reports that motorists have been advised to use alternative routes during recovery operations.

Meanwhile, the state government has assured residents of swift restoration of normalcy.
