Court sentences man to death by hanging for robbery, murder in Kano

A Kano High Court on Monday, sentenced oneAbdulaziz Umar to death by hanging for stabbing one Mubarak Salisu to death.

Umar, who lives in Fagge Quarters Kano was convicted on two-count charge of armed robbery and culpable homicide.

Delivering judgment, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“I hereby sentenced the convict to life imprisonment for robbery and to death by hanging for culpable homicide until he is certified dead,” she said.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Aisha Salisu, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Oct. 1, 2020, at Race Course, Badawa Layout in Kano.

She said that on the same date, Umar caused the death of Salisu by stabbing him in the stomach and hand with a sharp knife after attacking him during Independence Day celebrations and collecting his Samsung phone.

The prosecution presented five witnesses and tendered exhibits to prove their case against the defendant.

The convict, however, denied committing the offence.According to the prosecutor, the offence contravene the provisions of Section 298 and 221 of the Penal Code.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Ya’u Abdullahi, presented the convict to testify in his own defence.
