INEC’s restoration of state constituencies a bold step for equitable representation, justice – Ododo
Ahmed Ododo of Kogi says the restoration of 20 suppressed state constituencies across Kogi, Benue, Delta, and Jigawa by the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a ”bold step for equitable representation and justice for formerly under-represented communities”.
Ododo said this on Tuesday in Lokoja during a Stakeholders’ meeting organised by INEC.
Describing the restoration of constituencies as more than a political exercise and upholding the rule of Law in Nigeria, Ododo said it represents a reestablishment of constitutional order and a renewed voice for affected communities.
“This development is a clear victory for democracy and the people.
“This moment represents a quiet but profound turning point in history, where justice and constitutional order have prevailed over expediency.
“The restoration process affirms equity, fairness, and the rightful representation of previously underserved populations,” he said.
The governor commended INEC for adhering strictly to legal and constitutional provisions, particularly in compliance with a Federal High Court ruling.
According to him, the vommission’s actions demonstrate institutional integrity and reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
He specifically lauded the leadership of INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ampitan, describing him as courageous, professional, and committed to fairness.
Ododo said the chairman’s conduct has strengthened trust in the electoral process and positioned INEC as a credible umpire in Nigeria’s democracy.
The governor also expressed support for the INEC leadership, acknowledging that upholding legality and transparency often attracts criticism from those resistant to due process.
He encouraged the commission to remain steadfast in its commitment to justice and fairness.
The governor extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for appointing a competent and principled individual to lead INEC at a critical time.
He further commended the President for allowing judicial independence in the matter, noting that such actions contribute to democratic growth and institutional strength.
Assuring INEC officials and stakeholders of the state government’s full cooperation, the governor highlighted that adequate security measures have been put in place to support their activities.
Ododo also used the opportunity to showcase the state’s progress, describing the current period as the “Kogi Rebrand Era.”
He pointed to improvements in security, infrastructure, and public perception, positioning the state as one of the safest in the country.
In his remarks, the Supervising National Commissioner in charge of Kogi, Kwara, and Niger, Prof. Sani Adams, described the task as a complex but necessary one.
He explained that the exercise is aimed at implementing court directives while maintaining constitutional balance, particularly regarding the limits on the number of constituencies per federal constituency.
Prof. Adams called for maximum cooperation from stakeholders, noting that the process would involve field assessments and consultations to ensure that any adjustments made are fair, lawful, and in the overall interest of the state.
Similarly, the Kogi Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Shehu Abdulwahab, highlighted the importance of collaboration, noting that the exercise is taking place alongside other major electoral activities, including party primaries and voter registration.
He stressed that stakeholder’s support would be critical to achieving the desired outcome.
Legal representatives for the three senatorial district who spoke at the meeting raised concerns about potential imbalances in representation, warning against selective adjustments that could create new inequalities.
They called for a comprehensive and inclusive approach that addresses all underrepresented areas across the state.
The legal representatives emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional provisions, including limits on constituency allocation, while advocating for a more equitable distribution that reflects population and ensures no area is marginalised.
