Ododo approves free health insurance for sickle cell warriors in Kogi
Ahmed Ododo of Kogi has approved free health insurance coverage for individuals living with sickle cell disease (sickle cell warriors) in the state.
The initiative, announced by the state government, will enrol “Sickle Cell Warriors” on the Kogi Health Insurance Scheme at no cost.
This is contained in a statement by Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo on Friday in Lokoja in commemoration of the World Sickle Cell Day 2026.
Ododo described the intervention as a landmark step to ease the financial burden of managing the condition and improve access to quality healthcare.
He said the move reflects his administration’s commitment to building an inclusive society where vulnerable citizens receive care without financial barriers.
The governor noted that sickle cell disorder remains a major public health challenge requiring greater awareness, early diagnosis, and proper management.
“Under the scheme, beneficiaries will access medical services including routine care, crisis management, medications, and specialist consultations through accredited facilities statewide.
“The coverage is expected to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and improve health outcomes for patients,” he said.
Ododo stressed that no citizen should be denied healthcare due to financial constraints, assuring that his government will continue to prioritize people-centred policies that strengthen the health sector.
He commended parents, caregivers, healthcare workers, advocacy groups and development partners supporting sickle cell patients.
The governor also urged residents to embrace genotype testing and genetic counselling to prevent the spread of the disorder.
As Kogi joins the global commemoration, Ododo reassured patients: “you are not alone.
“My administration will continue to stand with Sickle Cell Warriors through policies that enhance their quality of life.”
