Oshodi-Isolo intensifies drainage clearing, canal dredging to curb flooding

The Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State has intensified drainage clearing and desilting across the council to prevent flooding and protect lives and property.

The Council Chairman, Mr Kehinde Almaroof-Oloyede, said this on Thursday during an inspection of the exercise at Oyegunwa Street and other locations.

Almaroof-Oloyede said the exercise was aimed at removing silt, refuse and other materials obstructing the free flow of rainwater.

He said the intervention formed part of the council’s environmental management strategy as the rainy season intensified.

According to him, free-flowing drainage channels remain one of the most effective measures for mitigating flooding and protecting infrastructure, homes and businesses from avoidable damage.

The chairman said the ongoing dredging of the Apakun Canal was also progressing steadily.

He said the canal passed through several communities before linking the Ogunoloko axis of the local government area.

Almaroof-Oloyede said the dredging project would improve stormwater discharge, reduce flooding risks and enhance environmental sanitation in affected communities.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for residents.

The chairman urged residents to support government efforts by refraining from dumping refuse into drainage channels and canals.

He said environmental sustainability was a collective responsibility that required the cooperation of all residents.
