Tinubu welcomes 4.43% GDP growth
President Bola Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s 4.43 per cent economic growth in the second quarter of 2026, saying reforms are delivering results.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported on Monday that GDP grew by 4.43 per cent, compared with 4.23 per cent recorded in Q2 2025.
The latest performance reflected growth across agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services, which remained the largest contributor to aggregate GDP.
This is contained in a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Monday in Abuja.
In nominal terms, Nigeria’s aggregate GDP rose to N119.27 trillion in Q2 2026, representing an 18.43 per cent increase from N100.7 trillion.
Tinubu said the figures came at an important time, amid opposition claims that his administration’s economic policies had worsened living conditions.
“In the past three years, we tried to do the hard part by implementing the necessary reforms to stabilise the economy.
“Now the economy is stabilised, and we have laid the foundation for a prosperous nation,” he said.
The President stressed that the reforms were designed to establish sustainable prosperity, rather than deliberately impose hardship on Nigerians.
“We didn’t do the reforms to create challenges, but to ensure prosperity reaches all our people,” Tinubu said.
He said the latest indicators showed that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda was producing measurable economic results.
“The results of the efforts are becoming very clear to all: The Renewed Hope Agenda is working,” the President said.
Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s trade surpluses, stronger foreign reserves, improved credit ratings and increased infrastructure development as evidence of economic recovery.
“Because of those tough decisions, today Nigeria has trade surpluses. Our foreign reserves are at their highest in 17 years.
“Our credit rating has moved up several notches. We are building roads, railways and superhighways that will last for a long time,” Tinubu said.
He also cited returning investors and rising oil and gas production as further signs that confidence in Nigeria’s economy was improving.
“Investors who left are returning. Oil and gas production is increasing,” the President said.
Tinubu also pointed to developments in education and access to credit, saying reforms were creating opportunities while strengthening social and economic inclusion.
“And in our universities, for the first time in a long time, there are no strikes. Our children are in class,” he said.
He said the Nigeria Education Loan Fund was expanding access to higher education, while affordable credit was being provided to civil servants.
“And through NELFUND, student loans are putting education within reach, and affordable credit is going to our civil servants through Creditcorp,” Tinubu said.
The President acknowledged continuing hardship among vulnerable Nigerians, saying his administration would intensify measures to cushion their economic difficulties.
“We are addressing some of the challenges being faced by our vulnerable population by providing cheaper means of transport,” he said.
He added that government would ramp up food production and implement additional relief programmes targeting vulnerable Nigerians. “These measures will touch lives at the grassroots,” Tinubu said.
The President said the government’s priority remained translating stronger macroeconomic performance into tangible improvements in citizens’ daily lives.
“Under our watch, the economy is on the irreversible path to experience even more growth that all homes will feel at the dining table and in their pockets,” he said.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would sustain its reform efforts while pursuing policies capable of delivering broader economic prosperity.
“We are not resting on our oars. We are fully committed to translating consistent, stronger economic performance into better microeconomic outcomes for our citizens,” he said.
He welcomed the latest GDP figures, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to sustaining growth while improving citizens’ welfare and living standards.
