Lagos tourism mourns passing of veteran actor, Olu Jacobs

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has expressed sadness over the death of veteran actor and cultural icon, Oludotun Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs.

In a statement on Thursday, Benson-Awoyinka said Jacobs, who died at 84 years old, was a distinguished actor, film executive, mentor and cultural icon.

Describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s performing arts, Benson-Awoyinka said Jacobs was more than an accomplished actor.

She said his career spanned theatre, television, storytelling and film, with decades of memorable performances.

The commissioner said Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before building a distinguished career.

She said his professionalism, depth and excellence earned him respect across Nigeria’s creative industry.

“His body of work, both on stage and screen, has left an enduring mark on generations of audiences and practitioners,” she said.

Benson-Awoyinka said Jacobs also contributed to the development of Nigeria’s film and theatre industry beyond acting.

She noted his work with the Lufodo Group, a prominent Nigeria media, production, and entertainment services company, as well as his role in mentoring and developing emerging talents.

The commissioner said Jacobs was fondly regarded by many as an elder statesman of Nigeria’s creative industry.

She said his legacy would remain significant to Nigeria’s cultural heritage as the creative industry continued to draw inspiration from pioneers.

The commissioner commiserated with Jacobs’ wife, Joke Silva, his family, the Lufodo Group, colleagues and associates.

She also extended the state government’s condolences to the wider Nigerian creative community.

“We mourn the passing of a distinguished actor, mentor and cultural icon, while celebrating a life dedicated to the arts.

“His passing is a great loss to Lagos, Nigeria and the African creative community,” she said.

It was reported that Jacob’s death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a post released on his Instagram page on Wednesday.
