Independence Walk: Makinde calls for inclusive economic growth

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called for sustained efforts to achieve inclusive economic growth and reduce poverty and inequality as Nigeria prepares to mark its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Makinde made the call on Monday during an Independence Day Walk, organised by the Oyo State Ministry of Youth and Sports in Ibadan.

It was reported that the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Musibau Babatunde, represented the governor at the event.

The governor described the exercise as a symbolic demonstration of unity and collective commitment towards building a stronger Oyo State and Nigeria.

He noted that Nigeria has come a long way since gaining independence, stressing the need to sustain its focus on developing and improving the living conditions of its citizens.

Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) in the forthcoming 2027 presidential election, also solicited support for his political ambition.

He also called on residents to support the APM governorship candidate in Oyo State, Mr Bimbo Adekanmbi, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Makinde urged members and supporters of the party to work collectively towards its success at the elections.

He commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports for organising the walk, and applauded the large turnout of government officials, civil servants, youths and other participants.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mrs Wasilat Adegoke, described the walk as one of the activities lined up by the state government to mark Nigeria’s independence anniversary.

Adegoke said the initiative was designed not only to celebrate the country’s independence but also to encourage healthy living and strengthen unity among the state’s youths and residents.

It was reported that the walk commenced at the frontage of the State Government House, Agodi, and terminated at the State Government Secretariat.
