The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Dr Benjamin Kalu, on Monday, distributed 26 units of 300kVA transformers to the 13 wards in his Bende Federal Constituency.
It was reported that over 1,000 solar-powered lights were also distributed to households at a ceremony that took place in Kalu’s Bende country home.
Addressing representatives of the benefitting communities and households, he described the ceremony as a formal launch of the Renewed Hope Light-Up Bende project.
He said the project, facilitated by him, had two parts, connecting Bende to the national grid and providing solar homes.
He said that representation required needs assessment, which showed that darkness was Bende’s greatest challenge.
According to him, the lack of power has affected economic life, security, human capacity development and job creation in the area.
The lawmaker further said the intervention had a ripple effect that trickled down from President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He further said the president intended from the outset to improve the country’s economic life, starting from communities.
He thanked the president for initiating the agenda which, he said, had been a roadmap for achievements.
Kalu said although the president built roads and hospitals, he was also intentional about improving rural lives.
He said the president gave a marching order for the provision of solar systems to all homes, after he informed him that Bende had 42,000 households in need of light.
“The solar project is the first of its kind, with 42,000 homes to receive light in Bende Federal Constituency.
“The installations will be geo-located, monitored via phone and guaranteed to last for 10 years.
“Another batch of 10,000 solar-powered lights will be distributed in the next two weeks,” Kalu said.
He explained that Tinubu loves the South-East, hence he ensured that landmark initiatives commenced from the zone.
He said the president recently approved the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project to commence in Bende.
He said that network connectivity had improved and all parts of Bende would be covered before December.
The Project Coordinator, Mr Peter Okoh, said the 40,000 solarisation project in Bende LGA had set a national record.
Okoh said that youths would be trained and certified on solar panel installation and meter payment generation.
The Director General of Benjamin Kalu Campaign Organisation, Mr Emma Ekeh, said the transformers would reduce electricity challenges, arising from dilapidated infrastructure in the area.
It was reported that highlight of the event was the signing of a N100 million contract with Kelofs Engineering Limited for the restoration of Item Community’s 33kV line.
The project covers reticulation and replacement of vandalised distribution materials and will be completed in three weeks.
