EKEDC assures Badagry residents of adequate electricity supply

The management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Friday assured the residents of Badagry communities of adequate electricity supply.

The Business Manager, Agbara/Badagry District of EKEDC, Mr Odunayo Fati, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to the chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr Babatunde Hunpe, in Lagos.

He acknowledged that Badagry was currently underserved in terms of electricity supply and assured the chairman of the company’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised.

Fati appreciated to the chairman for the warm reception and commended the people of Badagry for their cooperation with the company.

He commended the residents, particularly in protecting electricity infrastructure and treating its personnel with dignity.

The manager, however, requested the council to provide a comprehensive list of the affected transformers and their locations.

He said that the necessary steps would be taken to facilitate connection to the national grid.

Fati said that Badagry was presently served through three feeders from the Korogbodji Substation, the Oko-Afo, Badagry, and Badagry Expressway feeders.

He noted that, while distribution companies were responsible for electricity distribution, they neither generated nor transmitted power.

According to him, considering the rapid growth of Badagry Federal Constituency, the area requires a 132/33KV Injection substation to significantly improve electricity supply.

“This injection substation will also reduce load shedding and meet the increasing demand arising from population growth, commercial expansion and new residential developments,” he said.

Responding, the council chairman expressed concern over a number of electricity-related challenges confronting residents, including inadequate power supply and estimated billing.

He said that other challenges were the growing number of community-funded and government-provided transformers that remained unconnected in spite of being installed.

Hunpe recalled facilitating the procurement of about five transformers for various communities during his tenure as a member of the House of Representatives.

The chairman said that, in spite of engaging officials recommended by the company’s headquarters to oversee the installation, the transformers were yet to be energised.

‘’This has left the beneficiary communities without the intended electricity supply, ‘’ he said.

Hunpe described the situation as a setback to grassroots development and urged EKEDC to expedite action on connecting the affected transformers.

He stressed that residents deserved to enjoy the benefits of investments made toward improving electricity supply.
