Makinde reaffirms commitment to fostering religious harmony

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed commitment to fostering religious tolerance and supporting all faiths in the state.

Gov. Seyi Makinde stated this on Thursday, at the 2026 Isese Day celebration, held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

The governor represented at the event by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Kazeem Adeniyi, said the administration also remains committed to creating an enabling environment where Christians, Muslims, and adherents of Traditional Religion are given equal respect and recognition.

Makinde maintained that his administration recognises ‘Isese’ as an integral part of Yoruba heritage and identity.

“We believe that peaceful coexistence among all faiths is key to the development and unity we are building in our dear state,” he said.

The governor commended the adherents of traditional religion for preserving Yoruba culture, values, and traditions, stressing “government will continue to partner with traditional institutions to ensure the growth of cultural tourism in Oyo State.”

He urged all residents not to relent in supporting his administration’s efforts towards improving the socio-economic growth of the state.

In his keynote address, the President of ‘Isese’ in Oyo State, Chief Omikunmi Egbelade, described the festival as part of Yoruba history, identity and heritage.

Egbelade urged all adherents of traditional religion to protect their heritage, noting that unprotected heritage could become extinct.

It was reported that the event featured traditional drumming, dance, prayers for peace and prosperity of the state.

Isese Day is observed annually on Aug. 20 to celebrate Yoruba culture, spirituality, and ancestral heritage.
