Court orders rearrest of 2 suspected cult members

A Magistrates’ Court in Dutse, Abuja, on Monday ordered the rearrest of two suspected cult members for jumping bail.

The police charged Ogene Bright, 23, and Sunday Adamu, 25, with unlawful assembly, resisting arrest, grievous hurt and criminal intimidation.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mrs Ogehenekaro Agbodo, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on July 17.

She said ASP Tukur Abubakar led police detectives to invite Bright and Adamu to the police station following complaints from some members of Tasha Village, Abuja, that the defendants were terrorising villagers.

Agbodo said the defendants violently refused to honour the police invitation.

She alleged that Victor, Adamu’s brother, who is at large, attacked and inflicted injuries on ASP Abubakar, the DCO III of Gwagwa Division, Abuja.

She said the defendants called other members of their fraternity, who joined in the assault.

She said that they also threatened to kill the police officers.

Agbodo said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 103, 171, 248 and 379 of the Penal Code Law.

Agbodo further informed the court that the defendants, inspite of being granted bail, failed to appear in court without giving any reason.

Senior Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Alkali, citing Section 184 of the Criminal Justice Act held that the sureties must show cause why their bail bonds should not be forfeited.

He consequently ordered the rearrest of the defendants for failing to appear in court.
