FG mourns suspected Niger illegal miners

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 37 suspected illegal miners detained during enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities in Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Niger.

The ​‌‌‍​‍⁠⁠‌⁠​‍‍‌‌‌​‌​suspected illegal miners died in custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger Command.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr Mohammed Idris, conveyed the Federal Government’s condolences to Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger, the government and people of the state.

Idris also sympathised with the traditional leadership and people of Wushishi, particularly the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the incident.

In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Rabiu Ibrahim in Abuja on Friday, the minister said the Federal Government shared in the grief arising from the unfortunate tragedy.

He stressed that the protection of lives, dignity and fundamental rights of every Nigerian remained a solemn government responsibility.

Idris said the circumstances surrounding the death required thorough, transparent and impartial investigation to establish what happened.

He noted that immediate steps had already been taken by the government to establish the facts and determine the circumstances that led to the loss of lives.

The minister said the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had ordered the suspension of the Niger Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Suberu Aniviye.

He added that the interior minister had also directed full investigation into the incident, describing the action as an indication of the seriousness attached to the matter.

He added that “the swift action taken by the Minister of Interior underscores the seriousness with which the Federal Government views this matter.”

He assured Nigerians that the investigation would be allowed to establish exactly what happened and appropriate action taken based on the findings.

Idris stressed that the Federal Government remained committed to combating illegal mining and other unlawful activities that threatened national security, economic resources and the environment.

He, however, maintained that “all enforcement operations must be conducted within the law and with due respect for human life, dignity and safety.

“There will be no attempt to shield anyone found culpable,” the minister said, while cautioning against prejudging the outcome of the investigation.

He appealed for calm in Wushishi and across Niger State, urging residents and all concerned parties to allow the investigation to proceed without interference.

He assured the affected families and community of Federal Government’s commitment to establishing the facts and ensuring justice.
