Adamawa recruits 5,000 teachers, plans additional 3,000 – Fintiri
Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa says the state has concluded the recruitment of 5,000 teachers and plans to employ an additional 3,000.
Fintiri, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, disclosed this in Yola at the commemoration of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
The theme of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day is: “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”
He said the 4,056 newly recruited teachers had been captured by the Accountant-General’s Office and would soon be uploaded onto the state payroll.
The governor said the remaining 944 teachers would be captured after verification at their respective places of posting.
Fintiri said the administration recruited more than 4,000 teachers between 2021 and 2023, while introducing free education in public schools.
He said the government had continued to pay WAEC, NECO and other national examination fees for final-year students since 2019.
According to him, the measure was aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and improving access to education.
Fintiri said the state accessed and utilised Universal Basic Education Commission funds, resulting in the construction of more than 25,000 classrooms across schools.
He added that the government constructed 21 model basic education schools and three mega science and technical secondary schools to expand access to quality education.
The governor described teachers as critical to human and societal development, saying they shape children’s character, knowledge and future.
He said Adamawa teachers were among the highest-paid public servants in the state, adding that responsibility allowances would be introduced for head teachers and principals.
Fintiri said the government established the Teaching Service Commission to oversee teacher recruitment, deployment and promotion as part of reforms in the education sector.
Mr Faisal Mohammed, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Adamawa, commended the government for implementing promotions for teachers in post-primary schools.
Mohammed appealed to the governor to extend the promotion exercise to primary school teachers and the elongation of service granted to science and English teachers.
He also called for regular training and retraining, community-based teacher recruitment, and renovation of teachers’ quarters to improve working conditions.
He said the measures would strengthen the education system and enhance teachers’ effectiveness across the state.
It was reported that highlights of the event included the presentation of awards to outstanding teachers and school administrators.
