Kaduna Police clarify circumstances surrounding journalist’s arrest

The Police Command in Kaduna State, has clarified the circumstances surrounding the case of Farida Isiak, a journalist with Nagarta Radio, Kaduna, urging media practitioners to uphold responsible journalism.

The Command made the clarification in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, following a publication alleging the arbitrary arrest and detention of the journalist and her hasty sentencing.

The statement said the publication had portrayed the incident as an attempt by the police to silence the media.

According to the Command, the matter arose from a social media post allegedly made by Isiak on her Facebook page, containing statements directed at the Nigeria Police Force, a police officer and his family.

The Command said the post included criticisms of the Police Force and the leadership of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Maraban Jos.

It attributed the incident to a disagreement between the parties following a request made by the journalist, urging that the circumstances be assessed objectively and in their proper context.

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Command, had personally intervened since Wednesday to facilitate an amicable resolution of the matter.

The Command expressed concern over publications that criticised the police without adequate verification of the facts or efforts to obtain its position.

It said such reporting could present an incomplete account of events and unfairly damage the reputation of the Police and the individuals involved.

The Command urged media organisations and practitioners to uphold accuracy, fairness, balance and responsible journalism, stressing the need to verify allegations and give all relevant parties an opportunity to respond before publication.

It reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, upholding citizens’ constitutional rights and maintaining a professional relationship with the media.

While acknowledging the indispensable role of the press in a democratic society, the command said freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly, with due regard for the rights and reputations of others and in accordance with applicable laws.

It reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with media practitioners and other stakeholders in the interest of peace, security and justice in Kaduna State.
