The Nigerian Army says it will soon operationalise its newly established 83 Division in Benin City, as part of efforts to expand its force structure and strengthen security operations nationwide.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit to Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo at Government House, Benin City.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Shaibu said the establishment of the division was part of the Army’s expansion from eight to 12 divisions to improve military presence, command and control, and rapid response to security threats.

He said that the development would strengthen security operations in Edo and the wider South-South region.

The COAS said the visit was also to assess operational activities at Headquarters 4 Brigade and commission key Army projects.

The projects include the Affordable Home Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS) and civil-military cooperation initiatives.

He said the initiatives were aimed at improving personnel welfare and strengthening relations with host communities.

Shaibu added that the projects formed part of the Army’s efforts to enhance operational effectiveness while addressing personnel welfare needs.

In his remarks, Okpebholo commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and contributions to peace and security in Edo.

He assured the COAS of his administration’s continued support and collaboration with the Army to strengthen security and sustain stability in the state.

The operationalisation of 83 Division is part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing restructuring and expansion programme to enhance its capacity to respond to evolving security challenges.
