A former minister of defense, Rtd. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma on Saturday urged Nigerians to rise up defend themselves from killers across the country instead of depending on the arm forces.
Danjuma disclosed this at the maiden convocation and 10th anniversary of the Taraba State University, Jalingo.
The elder statesman explained that the arm forces of Nigeria at the moment were providing cover and defending the killers.
“You must rise to protect your selves from these people, if you depend on the arm forces for protection, you will all die one by one.
“The ethnic cleansing must stop now, otherwise, Somalia will be a child’s play.
“I ask everyone of you to be on the alert and defend your country, defend your territory, defend your state because you have no where else to go.
“The arm forces are not neutral, they are conniving with the armed bandits that are killing people,” he said.
Danjuma described Taraba as a miniature Nigeria with beautiful cultures which the bandits were doing everything to destroy.
On his part, Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku stressed the need for tertiary institutions in the state to increase their capacity to generate revenue.
He said if tertiary institutions improve on their revenue base it would help them to be self reliant than depending fully on Government.
Ishaku applauded former Governors of the state, Reverend Jolly Nyame for initiating the University project and the boldness of Late Danbaba Danfulani Suntai for establishing the institution.
The Governor affirmed the commitment of his administration to improve the standard of the University to be among the best in the country.
He commended the Vice Chancellor of the state University Vincent Tenebe,management and students of the institution for their cooperation.
In his convocation address Vice Chancellor of the Taraba State University Vincent Tenebe said the institution has witnessed infrastructural and Academic developments.
The VC emphasized that the University is endowed with Serene environment that encourages extra curricular activities.
Tenebe also revealed that the Joint admission and matriculation board JAMB has expanded the numbers of those to be matriculated from two thousand four hundred and seventy to five thousand students.
The Professor, thanked Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku for his support that has ensured the establishment of more faculties and engagement of Professors from three to over fifty.
He said plans are also on the way for the University to commence doctorate program.
The Convocation ceremony featured the installation of General Jeremiah Husseini Retired as the Chancellor of the Taraba State University, conferment of Doctorate Degree to General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma and Professor Saad Bogoro of TETFUND.
There was also an endowment fund launching for a Multi purpose sports complex and a permanent convocation ground with the highest donation of one hundred million naira from General Yakubu Danjuma while the state Government donated twenty five million naira.
