Theatre festival: Tori Tori performance holds in Lagos

Tonight, at City Hall, Lagos viewers will be treated to the 2nd and final performance of Tori-Tori.  Telling a tale that all societies can relate to, the Kininso Productions group have put on a fine display. They tackle issues in a serious yet engaging manner highlighting the hopes and freedom towards a common future, this year’s theme of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted in London this April.

The Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states. Members have no legal obligation to one another. Instead they are united by language, history, culture and their shared values of democracy, free speech, human rights and the rule of law.

Tori Tori is a social realistic play, which covers social, political, economic and cultural issued.  It lampoons every system that embraces misappropriation and sheds light on the need for a common future that is all inclusive.  It is inspired by the stated goals of the Commonwealth of Nations and the burning desire to speak and be heard for positive impact.

Andrew Davidson, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission noted that it was ‘a frank yet artful, exploration of the common struggles that countries in the Commonwealth face, and a reminder of the strength in a unified move for their resolution  ’

The group Kininso Koncepts is a young people’s art ensemble, who uses dance, drama, music, movement and poetry to tell their story. They aim to not only entertain, inform and educate but also challenge audiences as humans towards nation building and the need for intellectual, physical, social and cultural development. Tori Tori certainly does this. And should not be missed.  Showing tonight at City Hall, Council Chamber, Catholic Mission Street at 6pm.

Part of the richly acclaimed Lagos Theatre Festival, Tori Tori is one of more than 100 theatre being shown this week across the city and was supported by the British Council and British High Commission.
