Senate committee on works to synergize with Ogun on erosion control

As part of efforts to address the challenges posed by environmental hazards across the State, the Ogun State Ministry of Environment has received Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Works on inspection of gullies and erosion sites across the State.

The Acting Director of Flood and Erosion, State Ministry of Environment, Engr. Ismail Adenuga who led the team to some gully erosion sites in State, said the State Government had taken measures to prevent erosion in the State, adding that the Senate Committee’s visit would complement effort of State Government’s efforts on ecological challenges.

“The State Government has put in place measures to prevent flooding, erosion and other ecological challenges in the State, and this is because protection of lives and properties of people is top priority of government’s agenda. I believe that the visit of the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Works to some gullies in the State will further complement steps that we have put in place to address environmental challenges,” He said.

The Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Works, represented by two of its members, Senator Lanre Tejuoso of Ogun Central Senatorial District and Senator Tayo Alasoadura of Ondo Central Senatorial District visited Makun in Sagamu, Kekere-Ekun, in Ijebu-ode and Adigbe in Abeokuta areas of the State.

Senator Tejuoso described the mission of the Committee members to the State as urgent and timely, adding the ad hoc committee was set up principally because of the numerous petitions received by Senate on ecological disasters from the people across the Country.

He said there were numerous petitions by Nigerians on various ecological disasters areas across the Country, such as erosion, gullies, potholes and so on. And of course, many petitions on bad roads all over the country. Thus, an Ad-Hoc Committee on works was immediately swung into action by mandating members to go and inspect the places in the country where petitions was received.

In the same vein, Senator Alasoadura expressed optimism that once the Senate got the report of the Ad-Hoc Committee on works, government would swiftly work towards rescuing people from dangers portended by the gully sites.

“One of the reasons why we came here is to see for ourselves and as soon as we get back to Abuja, we are going to put up our report to the Senate and we believe that the Senate that set up this committee will do something urgently and timely so that lives and properties are prevented from being destroyed,” he remarked.
