NSCDC arrests 14 suspected thieves at Sokoto central market
The Sokoto State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested 14 suspected thieves, who burgled some shops at the Sokoto central market.
The suspects were paraded before newsmen in Sokoto on Thursday by the Corps Commandant in the state, Mr Babangida Abdullahi.
Abdullahi lamented that the suspects aged between 13 and 18 years.
The commandant said that the corps arrested five of them on the night of Dec. 24 after breaking into some shops but could not get any money.
”The corps also arrested nine of them after breaking into some shops on the night of Dec. 25 but carted away about one million naira (N1m) and shoes worth N 1.3 million.
” We were able to recover a substantial part of the stolen cash and some shoes”.
Abdullahi stated that the suspects, who had all confessed to committing the offences, would soon be charged to court.
He lauded the Director-General of the market, Alhaji Abdullahi Bafarawa, for properly facilitating the operations of the corp’s outpost at the market.
Also commenting, Bafarawa promised to continue to partner with the corps to make business activities at the market more secure and safer.
” We will render any needed support to assist them to function effectively at the market so as to bolster buying and selling.
”On our own, we have recently repaired the fence of the market with a view to strengthening security and keep criminals at bay,” Bafarawa added.
