My heart breaks at high death toll in care homes – Merkel

The high number of deaths in German care homes during the Coronavirus pandemic has taken a heavy emotional toll on Chancellor Angela Merkel, she says.

“My heart breaks when I see how many people have died there in solitude,” Merkel told reporters in Berlin.

“This is emotionally very difficult for me, too.”

Germany’s death toll has almost tripled since early December to almost 50,000.

Care homes for the elderly have been particularly hard hit by the country’s second wave of infections.
