Karim Benzema rescued a late 1-1 draw for Real Madrid at Atletico Madrid in a tight derby clash at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

The result kept champions Real Madrid’s hopes of defending the title alive.

Luis Suarez sent Atletico Madrid ahead in the 15th minute with an excellent finish after being played in by Marcos Llorente.

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a superb double save from Benzema late on to keep his team’s lead, but could not stop the Frenchman striking in the 88th minute to level.

Atletico Madrid still top the league on 59 points from 25 games, three points ahead of second-placed FC Barcelona who beat Osasuna 2-0 on Saturday.

They are five points ahead of Real Madrid, who alongside FC Barcelona, have played 26 matches.

Earlier, Celta Vigo earned a thrilling 4-3 win at Huesca, with Fran Beltran scoring the decisive goal for the Galicians in the 76th minute, the seventh different scorer in the game.
