Shehu Shagari Varsity takes off in 2022 – Official

The Sokoto State Government says the new Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto, will commence operations in 2022.

Mr Al-Mustapha Ali, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Higher Education, made the disclosure on Friday, when officials of the ministry appeared before the State House of Assembly Committee on Higher Education to defend its 2022 proposed budget.

Our correspondent recalls that Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, had on December 28, 2020, announced the upgrading of the 51-year-old Shehu Shagari College of Education to a University of Education.

According to Tambuwal, the decision was premised on the enviable track records College.

“The College’s uncommon and trademark foresight, vision, creativity and leadership acumen are historically associated with our forefathers for over two centuries,” he said.

According to Ali, the new College of Medical Sciences of the State University will also commence activities in the same year.

“The new University of Education will bolster the training of adequate manpower that will take care of the state’s educational sector.”

“The College of Medical Science is to provide additional personnel for our medical institutions and hospitals.”

“The medical facilities include: The new University Teaching Hospital, which is under construction and the upgraded General Hospitals across the state,” he said.

Ali added that the state government has made adequate provisions for the commencement of over 50 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the state University.

“We are fully set to ensure that all courses offered at the Higher Institution owned by the state government get the required accreditation as and when due,” he added.

The Committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Sule Romo (PDP- Tambuwal West), assured that the Assembly would continue to support the ministry towards achieving its desired achievements in education.

In another development, the state government has restated its commitment towards completing and initiating legacy projects under the state Ministry for Health in the year 2022.

Dr Ali Inname, the state Commissioner for Health, disclosed this when the officials of the ministry appeared before the House Committee on Health to defend its 2022 budget proposal.

According to Inname, the ministry has recorded a lot of achievements in the year 2021 and will continue in the same direction to ensure proper healthcare delivery in the state.

“In the year 2022, we will continue to remain committed towards ensuring the success of our legacy projects in the health sector.”

“The state government will also ensure the upgrading of more general Hospitals to Specialist Hospitals,” he said.

The Committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Sarki (PDP- Sokoto North II), commended the state government for according top priority to the health sector in the state.

He assured that the committee will continue to work closely with the ministry to ensure the delivery of world-class healthcare services to the people of the state.
