Yuletide: FRSC to enforce use of speed limiting device

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will enforce and ensure the strict use of speed limiting device during this yuletide to avoid road crashes.

The Akwa Ibom Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr Matthew Olonisaye, said this in an interview with our reporter in Uyo on Thursday.

Olonisaye said that commercial drivers caught without installation of speed limiting device in their vehicles would be apprehended.

He reminded drivers that speeding was a major contributing factor in fatality rate and warned them against excessive speed.

Olonisaye added that the command has put measures in place to ensure the road was free of gridlock and also safe for road users.

He said all personnel would be mobilised for the purpose of traffic management during the period, adding that all operational vehicles have been maintained to function effectively.

“We are really concerned with commercial vehicles this time, if any commercial vehicle is caught without installing speed limiting device, then we will do the needful. We will be very strict with commercial vehicles and it will be a continuous enforcement.

“Do not forget speed is the major contributing factor in fatality rate, so, we expect that drivers abide by the maximum speed limit. We have put measures in place to ensure the road is free of traffic gridlock and also safe for road users,” Olonisaye said.

The sector commander said the command had earlier flagged off ember month’s campaign to sensitise road users, create awareness and remind the people of their roles while using the road.

He added that there would be strong visibility of FRSC personnel in all strategic locations, especially in areas envisaged to be hiccups.

“Presently, we have put measures in place to ensure road is free and all our operational vehicles have been well maintained and we are ready to put all our personnel on strategic locations, where we envisage that there will be any hiccups

“Our visibility on the roads have been well planned and we will be on the road to calm drivers and other road users and use subtle enforcement to ensure people are not involved in any road violations to allow free flow of traffic,” he said.

He said the command would establish a Help Area at Itu Head Bridge along Calabar-Itu road to assist drivers calm down before they continue their journey.

He reminded drivers that they were not expected to drive more than four hours in a stretch, without resting for 15 minutes to relax.
