Driver docked for reckless driving, damaging police van

A 40-year-old driver, Wasiu Ogungbemi, who allegedly drove in a reckless manner and crashed into a Police pick up van was on Thursday docked in Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The police charged Ogungbemi who resides in Ebute Ero, Lagos Island with reckless and dangerous driving and causing serious damage to a Nigeria Police vehicle.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Donjour Perezi ,told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec. 28, 2021 on the Ojota Bridge, inward Ibadan, Ketu, Lagos.

Perezi alleged that the defendant drove on the public highway, having no regards to other road users, lost control of the Nissan vehicle with registration No: FKJ 54 YA and crashed into the police van.

He said that the defendant crashed into the police patrol van with registration No: RRS 243 LA which had stopped to assist some people who needed help with their own vehicle.

He also said the police pick up van was badly damaged as a result of the accident.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 7 and 18 of the Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State, 2012.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until July 22, for hearing.
