The Director-General of National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Chief Olusegun Runsewe, on Thursday encouraged Nigerians to make friends across ethnic groups to discourage and stop separatist agitations.

Runsewe made the call during a Dance Drama contest by children at the ongoing National Festival for Arts and Culture (NAFEST) at the National Stadium in Lagos.

He said the encouragement was necessary in view of the separatist agitation in some parts of the country.

The NCAC boss urged revellers at the festival to mingle, make friends and ensure the process of acculturation took effect.

According to him, this will bring about more understanding, effective communications and peaceful coexistence.

“At this stage of our national development, we need one another more than ever before; we need to stay united as friends.

“I want you all to make friends with one another so that we can understand one another very well to guide against consistent rancour,” he said.

Runsewe noted that the essence of the drama and other cultural contests was to ensure children were guided on cultural issues at an early age.

He also urged parents to always instill cultural values and norms in their children.

It was reported that 11 states participated in the dance drama presentation by children which depicted the theme for the festival “Culture and Peaceful Co-existence”.

Some of the states that presented included Rivers, Oyo, Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta and Ogun.

The 35th NAFEST commenced Nov. 7 and will be concluded on Nov.13, 2022.
