The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nasarawa State Command, says it has seized 4,765 Kilo Grammes of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa and 0. 582 Kilo Gramme of psychotropic substance.

Mr Dechi Elisha-David, state Commander of the NDLEA who revealed this to journalists on Thursday in Lafia, said the substances were seized within May.

Elisha-David noted that one of the ills bedeviling the state and the country at large was the influx of prohibited substances, especially cannabis sativa.

He said that in spite of the challenge, officers of the command were up and doing daily to ensure minimum reduction in the demand, supply, and sales of illicit drugs.

He said that the feats in May were achieved through the commitment and dedication of personnel of the command who dismantled some drug joints in different parts of the state.

According to him, on seizures were made between May 16 and 24, with four suspects arrested in connection with crime.

The commander said that the suspects apprehended were currently helping the command to track down other syndicate members.

He added that those arrested would be charged to court for prosecution in line with the law.

Elisha-David also said that the command had commenced massive awareness and counseling towards educating the public on the dangers of selling or consuming illicit drugs.

“We have visited 30 public places, including schools and market places in May alone on our War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign.

“We have sensitised about 11,107 people, comprising 6,021 males and 5,086 females, as well as counseled 149 males and six females on the dangers of hard drugs,” he said.

The commander appreciated Gov. Abdullahi Sule for the logistics support to the agency to ensure its smooth operation.

He also appreciated the support of other security agencies in the state as well as members of the public in their efforts to tackle dealers of illegal and dangerous substances.
